About this event

We are delighted to offer a day with a difference at Blists Hill open air museum near Telford as we recreate scenes of a century ago including the shire horses that are based at the Museum during the main opening season.

Blists Hill Victorian Town in Shropshire, just a short distance from Telford and near J4 and J6 of the M54 motorway to Shrewsbury, is one of the country’s best open air museums. We are pleased to have been offered a day of photography at this outstanding site, which on this occasion will showcase the horses and horse-drawn vehicles that are located on site during the main tourist season.

The creation of Blists Hill as a museum began in 1967 at the same time that a brand new town, Telford, was being built on the former East Shropshire Coalfield. The industrial archeology that had so defined the region during the Industrial Revolution and beyond was gradually disappearing and it was felt that efforts should be made to preserve the buildings and artefacts that were so much a part of the area’s history. Located on a fifty-acre site, Blists Hill incorporates some of the location’s original industrial features which have been restored. In addition to these, other buildings have been constructed to create a small town reminiscent of the area at the turn of the Nineteenth Century. The town is now one of ten museums that together form the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site. Period buildings from a variety of different areas have been accurately researched and then constructed using new heritage bricks and, with the exception of the post office, all are copies of an original structure from the area of the East Shropshire coalfields.

In what is a first for us, the Museum has agreed to the event taking place on a day when they are not open to the public. Although having the public around does not overly affect our events, it will certainly help to ensure clear backgrounds and uninterrupted cameos and provide fewer distractions for the horses.

We are grateful to Steve Ledsham, along with the staff and volunteers of the Museum, for their help in setting up this event. We will do our best to ensure there is a supporting cast of appropriately-dressed re-enactors to enhance our scenes.

We aim for a relaxed and enjoyable evening with plenty of vintage scenes to photograph against a great period backdrop. So, why not join us in October for what promises to be an action-packed session of photography at this world-famous venue.
