About this event

We are delighted to offer the opportunity to photograph a true branch line engine on an idyllic West Country branch line hauling a mixed train typical of railway byways in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Ivatt 2MT 2-6-2T No.41312 is paying a short working visit from the Mid-Hants Railway and will be matched with a short branch line train comprising a Mark I coach plus either a van or milk tank. The exact vehicles will depend on availability, but you can be sure they will be in keeping with the BR branch line ethos.

No.41312 itself was a West Country-based engine, being shedded at Barnstaple Junction between 1960 and 1963, from where it would have worked over the Torrington branch and the Ilfracombe to Exeter route. A Crewe-built locomotive, it went new to Faversham and also worked out of Brighton and Ashford. Whilst based at Bournemouth, 41312 worked over the Swanage branch and became the last steam loco to work over the Lymington branch in April 1967. Its last three months were spent working from Nine Elms as Waterloo Station shunter and withdrawal came in July 1967 as Southern Region steam reached the end of the line. After several years awaiting its fate at Barry scrap yard, the engine was initially rescued by the Caerphilly Railway Society, then later purchased by John Jones and returned to steam at Ropley on the Mid-Hants Railway in 1998; the MHR purchased the locomotive in 2019.

We will meet at Buckfastleigh Station from 08.00 for an expected 08.30 departure. High visibility orange jackets are required whilst at the lineside. We will spend a full day on the line, running until approximately 16.00 hours by which time the sun will be leaving the lineside. Places will be limited so do please book early to avoid disappointment.

For those of you who remember the superbly rewarding photography we enjoyed on the corresponding day in 2022 with Dinmore Manor, this is an event we anticipate keenly as our first steam railway charter of 2023.
