About this event

We are delighted to offer another chance to photograph the Ragged Victorians re-enacting group at the nineteen-acre Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings at Stoke Heath, Bromsgrove in Worcestershire.

The Ragged Victorians are one of the very best re-enactment groups with no detail spared in their quest for authenticity. They concentrate on portraying the lives of the very poorest members of society during the Victorian era and educating us all in how the working classes and below lived, or in some cases just survived, in the days long before the welfare state as we know it today existed. The Ragged Victorians demonstrate the harsh realities of life for the great unwashed as it was around 1851, warts and all. Not only do they provide a fascinating insight into British history as experienced by the population of over 150 years ago, but present an incredible photographic spectacle for those who appreciate grim accuracy and gritty realism. Those who have attended our previous events will be well aware of the sheer quality of the historical presentation offered by this most photogenic of groups.

As a departure from our previous events, for the afternoon we will be recreating a different and unusual scene as we erect a Victorian prize-fighting scenario complete with boxing ring and appropriate audience of the period, which should provide some extremely special photographs. The ring and the surrounding area will be roped off to ensure we have uninterrupted photographic opportunities.

Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings first opened in 1967 when the medieval Town House from Bromsgrove was rescued and reconstructed. Today, some thirty buildings of historical importance with a timespan ranging from the Fourteenth Century to the 1940s and 1950s have been reconstructed around this tranquil site. This is where buildings are preserved and conserved when it is not possible to retain them in their original location due to modern redevelopment.

Our event will start at 10.00 and run until 16.30 with a break for lunch. The tearooms will be open during the day so food, drink and light refreshments are catered for. The Museum is at a delightful site just outside Bromsgrove and is easily accessed with a short drive from either Junction 4 (from the north) or Junction 5 (from the south) of the M5. We look forward to seeing you at what has proved in the past to be one of the most popular events we offer.
