About this event

With grateful thanks to Nick Pidgely and the staff and volunteers of the Museum, we are pleased to be able to offer another ambitious steam event at Amberley Museum & Heritage Centre in West Sussex. We will have a full day of photography around this attractive site with many cameos created on a day when the Museum is closed to the general public, giving us great freedom to set up period scenes without the trappings of modern life interfering!

Our event will take place the day following the Amberley steam weekend and we expect to be using several of the visiting and home-based road steam engines that have been on site for the public event. It is a little early to confirm all of the engines taking part, but we expect to have a number of different attractions augmenting those from last year with up to 10 in steam, more details as these are confirmed. We aim to have at least one living van in use (and hopefully more) plus other period props to help recreate the days of steam in the 1920s and 1930s.

Amberley Museum is set in a former chalk pit in the West Sussex countryside. It was created in the 1970s to meet the need for a centre in the south east of England to conserve and demonstrate the industrial history which was rapidly being lost, and the County Council was persuaded to purchase the site at auction to stop inappropriate development. Since then it has grown into a major open air museum with its own railway, significant collection of road transport exhibits and many displays which reflect the industrial and archaeological past across a 36-acre site.

The Museum is located on the B2139 road between Storrington and Arundel in West Sussex, at BN18 9LT for those using satellite navigation, and is just a few hundred yards from Amberley Railway Station on the national network. Our meeting time is 09:30 for a 09:45 start with the day finishing up at 17:30. There is a cafe on site and it will be open, and free parking is available adjacent to the main line railway station. If you love live steam in its many forms then this is one event you really won’t want to miss!
