A rare opportunity for a full day photographing a BR Standard '2MT' with a northbound goods train, Wednesday 14th November 2018

We are pleased to be able to offer a full day of Winter steam action at the Great Central Railway featuring British Railways 'Standard' 2MT Class 2-6-0 No.78018 facing North (chimney towards Loughborough) at the head of a mixed goods train.

No.78018 will be specially turned for this and our passenger charter the following day which will give us the more unusual opportunities to go for glints and backlighting at a time of the year that should be absolutely ideal for spectacular Winter steam photography. Given the right conditions - frost-covered ground, a clear Winter's day, voluminous exhaust - it could be sensational, so here's hoping! It will also allow us the opportunity to take advantage on the ongoing lineside clearance in some locations which has opened up views that have not been available for several years.

No.78018 was built at Darlington in 1953, one of a class of 65 locomotives. It was based initially at West Auckland Depot, County Durham before moving to Kirkby Stephen. Having been based in the North of England, the loco is no stranger to Winter conditions and found fame when it somewhat unwittingly starred in the film Snowdrift at Bleath Gill in February 1955. In 1960, the 2MT moved to Chester Midland and after a series of other allocations, withdrawal came from Shrewsbury Depot in November 1966. After a prolonged restoration, the locomotive returned to steam at the Great Central Railway in October 2016. The Loughborough Standards Locomotive Group is custodian and the owners are the Darlington Railway Preservation Society who purchased the engine in scrap yard condition in 1981. We are grateful to both owners and custodians, as well as the Railway, for allowing us use of No.78018 for our two days of charters.

Our day will start at Loughborough station at 07.30 hours with our customary but important safety briefing and we will endeavour to ensure the buffet is open for hot drinks and food first thing. As this is a goods charter and we are not allowed to travel by train, we will travel to the day's locations by car. It would be a real advantage if as many people as possible would car share so as to reduce the number of vehicles we need to park at each location. We will make sure that everyone is either with or following someone who knows the way!

Given favourable weather conditions, this could produce potentially stunning results and we hope you will wish to join us in November to see what we can achieve.

Event cost £80.00 per person.
