Together with Jason Cross and the East Midlands Railway Photographic Society, we are pleased to present the unique opportunity to photograph a Western Region diesel hydraulic on double track main line with lower quadrant signals to boot.
Class 42 'Warship' D832 Onslaught is paying a short working visit to the Great Central Railway in September 2018 and we will have a day of photography with this very fine locomotive. Painted in British Railways green with small yellow warning panels, D832 will spend the first part of the day hauling a lengthy passenger rake with a mixture of chocolate and cream and maroon Mark I coaches. Just before lunch, we will switch to the GCR's excellent rake of box vans and use this consist for the rest of the day.
We will begin in the morning at Swithland Sidings with our customary but important safety briefing. We will pose the train and perform run pasts in amongst the lower quadrant signals. There are several differing angles of which we can take advantage here before moving on to photograph this formation at other locations and then changing stock. We will visit several more good locations during the day including Swithland Viaduct, Rabbit Bridge and Kinchley Lane, plus a further visit to Swithland to photograph the van train among the semaphores.
Due to operating policy at the GCR, photographers will be required to follow the train by car, so car sharing on the day would be helpful in order to keep the number of cars we need to park at each location to a minimum. We can assist in allocating participants to cars on the day as necessary, hopefully with someone who knows where they are going! D832 was built at Swindon in 1961. The locomotive was in traffic for a relatively short period, being withdrawn in December 1972 after just under twelve years in service. The locomotive is based at Bury on the East Lancashire Railway and is owned by the Bury Hydraulic Group; we are grateful to both the locomotive's owners and the Great Central Railway for facilitating this charter.
