About this event

Join us for a full day of Autumnal steam action on the Severn Valley Railway with Bulleid West Country Pacific No.34027 Taw Valley in British Railways green livery at the head of a train of carmine and cream coaching stock. The SVR is one of the country's premier steam lines running through the excellent scenery of Shropshire and Worcestershire. By late October, the Autumn leaves should be beginning to turn, bringing an additional element of colour to the landscape.

Our day will start and finish at Bewdley station (ample car parking is available and we will ask to have the buffet open first thing when we arrive on site). We will begin with shots in the Bewdley to Kidderminster section approaching Foley Park Tunnel and then setting back for run-pasts nearer to the station before running round and working tender first to Bridgnorth. We will then make our way back to Bewdley taking in such locations as Oldbury Viaduct, Eardington Bank, Severn Lodge and others as time allows.

Taw Valley was built in April 1946 in streamlined form at Brighton Works and initially allocated to Ramsgate Shed and numbered 21C127, moving to Exmouth Junction in 1947. In common with many other Bulleid Light Pacifics, the locomotive was rebuilt without its streamlined casing to the design of Ronald Guy Jarvis in September 1957, after which it was allocated to Brighton, finally moving to Salisbury in 1963 from where withdrawal came in August 1964. The loco was purchased for preservation in scrap yard condition and was moved to the Severn Valley Railway by its then owners Bert Hitchin and Brian Cooke in 1985. The loco steamed in October 1987 and fully entered service in June 1988. No.34027 worked many main line trips, returning to the SVR after purchase by Phil Swallow.

We are very pleased to have been offered a day with this superb locomotive which sports BR livery with the later crest, this being how many will remember these rebuilt Pacifics in the latter days of Southern Region steam. We hope you will wish to join us for the day, photographing steam in cool and colourful conditions as Autumn drifts towards Winter.
