About this event

We are delighted to offer 2 days in Snowdonia capturing fashion and mining portraits! Each day will have a different fashion model so attendees are welcome to book for both days if they desire! This event will take place around the surrounding area of Cwmorthin Quarry near Blaenau Ffestiniog so join us as we journey into this amazing location with a professional fashion model and a miner re-enactor! Cwmorthin Quarry boasts dramatic industrial scenes of crumbing mining ruins and chiselled slate slag piles, as well as a large lake and cascading waterfalls. This is the perfect place to capture atmospheric portrait images with eye catching backdrops. Cwmorthin Quarry is an old slate mine west of the village of Tanygrisiau, north Wales. Quarrying on the site started in 1810 and in 1860 it was connected to the Ffestiniog Railway. In 1900 it was acquired by the nearby Oakeley Quarry and the two were connected underground. In 1970 it closed but there was some small scale working in the 1980s and 1990s before the mine finally stopped production in 1997.

Our day will begin at 11:30am for a briefing in a local cafe (lakeside cafe) then we will head up into the quarry exploring a variety of different locations with our models that offer the best photography opportunities. The distressed slate buildings and grey stone slag piles will create a wonderful shooting environment for dramatic portraiture. The female model for the day will be wearing some eye catching flowing dresses that will contrast wonderfully with the grey slate. Our male model will be wearing authentic looking mining gear to create convincing historical portraits. With lakes, waterfalls and crumbling buildings there will be a chance to take a variety of different images and this course will aim to go on into the early evening if weather permits, to finish up around 7pm to make the most of the evening light.

This event is open to 15 photographers only.

Fitness Level:

High

The majority of walking will take place in open public space generally sticking to footpaths but please be aware that this is an old mining quarry area so some areas will be uneven and slippery. Good walking footwear and clothing is essential.

There will be some uphill walking involved as there is no vehicle access in the Quarry but attendees will be able to do this at their own comfortable pace. The first part of the path from the car park is a steep incline for about 200 meters before evening off.
