We pair visiting GWR 5101 Class No.4144 with three splendid Great Western coaches for a day at the SVR, Friday 22nd March 2019

With grateful thanks to the Severn Valley Railway and the locomotive’s owners the Great Western Society, we are delighted to offer a full day of photography using visiting ‘5101’ Class 2-6-2T No.4144.

No.4144 is paying a short working visit to the Severn Valley Railway for the line’s early season gala and we will pair the locomotive with three stunning GWR vehicles from the SVR’s excellent Great Western passenger set to give a totally authentic 1940s train. We will have the loco facing south in the morning to take advantage of shots approaching Bewdley Tunnel and around the station at Bewdley, both arriving past the North Signal Box and departing past the South Signal Box before heading to Kidderminster for lunch. Here, the engine will be turned and watered ready for an afternoon run to Highley taking in as many locations as we can when the afternoon light will be theoretically at its best. In this way, we aim to pack in as many shots as we comfortably can whilst keeping travelling time to a minimum.

No.4144 was built at Swindon in 1946 and withdrawn from Severn Tunnel Junction in the 1965, the final year of Western Region standard gauge steam. The class was seen widely across the GWR system, being used on passenger and goods duties, for suburban locals and branch line workings plus sometimes as banking locomotives in the West Country. No.4144 was overhauled in 2015 and is usually resident at the Great Western Society’s Didcot headquarters.

The day will start at Bewdley station at circa 08.30 and finish at the same venue at around 18.00 hours. As we are using passenger stock, travel will be by train throughout. We hope you will wish to join us for what promises to be a splendid day of authentic Great Western Railway steam action in the Midlands.
