About this event

This December we will be taking you on a journey through the capital for an evening that will promise to brighten up the dark winter days! With our quirky and eccentric Steampunk models on board we will be visiting a variety of different and eye catching locations that will include areas where we can capture the fantastic Christmas illuminations! We will have a red vintage RM bus that will be transporting us around, and we will be able to take photographs both inside and of the bus and models outside at the different locations.

It is fair to say that Steampunk most recognizably features anachronistic technologies or retro-futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in the era's perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. Such technology may include fictional machines like those found in the works of H. G.Wells and Jules Verne. Other examples of steampunk contain alternative-history-style presentations of such technology as lighter-than-air airships, analogue computers, or such digital mechanical computers as Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine. Steampunk may also incorporate additional elements from the genres of fantasy, horror, historical fiction, alternate history, or other branches of speculative fiction, making it often a hybrid genre. The first known appearance of the term steampunk was in 1987, though it now retroactively refers to many works of fiction created as far back as the 1950s or 1960s.

Steampunk also refers to any of the artistic styles, clothing fashions, or subcultures that have developed from the aesthetics of steampunk fiction, Victorian-era fiction, art nouveau design, and films from the mid-20th century. Various modern utilitarian objects have been modelled by individual artisans into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical "steampunk" style, and a number of visual and musical artists have been described as steampunk.

There will be two meeting location options for you to choose from. The bus will be leaving from its depot in Purfleet at 17:30. Anyone wishing to can get on the bus there, and the depot have kindly offered free parking on site for anyone who is driving. You can then travel from Purfleet into London, and return there on the bus in the evening. For anyone wishing to join us in London the meeting point will be Great Peters street off Millbank at about 7pm, with the nearest tube station being Westminster. We plan to have a refreshment stop halfway through the evening and the event will finish up just before midnight.
