We are delighted to offer the opportunity of a full day’s photography at the Great Central Railway featuring visiting loco ‘K1’ Class 2-6-0 No.62005 in British Railways lined black livery hauling both maroon plus carmine and cream passenger sets, to be swapped over at lunchtime.
No.62005 is paying a short working visit to Leicestershire from its home base of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to star at the GCR’s Winter Steam Gala and will undoubtedly be an extremely popular guest. The loco was built in 1949 for British Railways and carries an authentic lined BR black livery.
The whole class of seventy locos went to Eastfield Depot, Glasgow (not all together, of course!) for running in on completion at the Queen’s Park Works of the North British Locomotive Company. It was allocated at a number of depots during its career including Darlington, York and Tyne Dock before eventual withdrawal from Leeds Holbeck, where the loco was allocated from September 1967 until December 1967. Having survived largely through being used as a stationary boiler, it was purchased by a consortium which had previously purchased No.3442 The Great Marquess and was initially intended as a spare boiler for the K4. In due course, it was decided that 62005 should be preserved in its own right and, in 1972, the K1 was donated to the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group. No.62005 was overhauled at Thornaby Depot and moved to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in May 1974, entering traffic the following month. Since then, it has been a regular performer both on the NYMR and on the main line, probably being most associated with the West Highland line in Scotland in recent years.
Our day with 62005 will begin from Loughborough station at 09.30 hours which will enable us to work our way up the line rather than going direct to Swithland. Arriving at Loughborough station by 09.00 for our customary but most important safety briefing before departure. As today we are using coaching stock throughout, we will be travelling by train. We will arrange for breakfast to be served from 08.00 onwards, and once using the Red & Cream Coaches (after lunch) the Griddle Car will be open for food and drinks throughout the afternoon. Once the sun has set we will return to Loughborough where we will hold a short night shoot for those wishing to stay on. We expect to be finished around 19.00.

The ‘K1’ is an extremely popular locomotive and we hope you will wish to join us to photograph 62005 with both maroon plus carmine and cream coaching stock on double track in January 2020.
