About this eventJoin us for a full day at the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway to recreate scenes from the Great Western Railway of the 1920s and early 1930s. We will use No.823 Countess hauling a mixed train, probably making its final charter train appearance before withdrawal for heavy overhaul at the close of the 2020 season.
No.823 Countess is one of the original Beyer Peacock locomotives built for the opening of the line. It is restored in Great Western Railway green livery and it will be paired with the lineís mixed train which on this occasion we expect to comprise two Pickering coaches, two to three goods wagons and brake van. The trainís appearance is prototypical of the period 1923 until 1931, after which the passenger service was discontinued, with the original coaches being scrapped in 1934. The lineís three stunning replica coaches were constructed at Boston Lodge Works, allowing original period wagons to be added to form a completely authentic train for charters.
The day will start at Llanfair Caereinion station where there is ample free parking. We will ask if tea and coffee can be provided before we start and will also investigate whether the Llanfair bakery can provide some early morning bacon rolls and similar, provided there is enough interest from participants.
We have a full day out on the line with no other trains operating to give us maximum operating flexibility should we need to wait for light at any locations. Progress will be determined by the weather though we will visit as many quality locations as we can during the day. Travel will be by train throughout.
The Railway is extremely helpful, friendly and run an excellent charter and you will be made very welcome. So why not join us for a relaxed day out in lovely countryside with some great photographic opportunities thrown in for good measur.
