No.8572 is rapidly approaching the close of its current ten-year boiler certificate and subsequent withdrawal for overhaul, so we are taking this opportunity to pair the locomotive with matching stock before the B12/3 is taken out of traffic.
The day will start at Sheringham station at 08.15 and we will run through until sunset, hopefully including the fantastic glint shots just prior to dusk and followed by a night shoot in the station at Weybourne. We will have a short break for a change of crew at Weybourne around mid-day, but otherwise we will be at the lineside throughout the day. Those who have visited the line before will know that it offers fantastic opportunities for photography and is well worth making the journey to East Anglia to see.
The B12 class of locomotives was designed by Stephen Holden and built for the Great Eastern Railway, which became part of the LNER on grouping in 1923. Originally Class ‘S69’, the locos were reclassified as B12s by the LNER. No.8572 was one of ten later locomotives of this class and was built by Beyer Peacock of Manchester in 1928. The loco’s survival into preservation owes a lot to Bill Harvey, the former Norwich shedmaster, who ensured 8572 was kept in traffic until sufficient funds had been raised to purchase it; the loco was bought, along with ‘J15’ Class No.7564 , in 1963 and arrived at the North Norfolk Railway in 1967; the B12/3 returned to steam after a lengthy restoration on 3rd March 1995 and is the only surviving inside cylindered 4-6-0 in Britain.
Quad-art set No.74 was built at Doncaster in 1924. The set is unique, having been rescued for preservation by the Midland & Great Northern Railway Preservation Society in 1966. The set was sent to a scrap merchant in Wymondham and was stored at Ashwelthorpe until being purchased and moved to Sheringham on the North Norfolk Railway. The set was in use on the NNR until 1979, when its deteriorating condition led to withdrawal. A £500,000 restoration project began in 2003 and was completed in 2008 and the set is now used in traffic on special occasions, not only looking splendid but forming an important part of the history of passenger rail travel in Britain in its own right.
