About this event

Following our successful charter in and around Coventry two years ago, we are pleased to be able to offer a further charter using two immaculately-restored Coventry half-cabs in authentic matching livery, the extremely attractive deep maroon of Coventry City Corporation.

Our lead vehicle will be the recently-restored Coventry double-decker GKV 94 accompanied by either EKV 966 (nearest in period to each other as they are both 1940s designs) or one from 334 CRW or EKV 244 - all are in the splendid deep maroon Coventry vintage livery. We may need a little patience for the shots in the city centre but, as those who attended the previous event will know, it is quite possible to get the pictures that we want in locations very close to the centre of town.

We will meet at War Memorial Park entrance on Kenilworth Road close to the junction with Beechwood Avenue. There is free car parking here and although many park here to get the bus into town there should be plenty of space. The postal code for those using Satellite Navigation is CV3 6PT.

Coventry Corporation ran the City’s transport systems from 1912, when it took over the Coventry Electric Tramway Company, up until 1974 when the enterprise passed to the West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive. Buses were first introduced to the City in 1914 although the service was short-lived when the chassis of the first six buses to enter service were requisitioned for military use by the War Office. Those bus services introduced after the First World War were more permanent and, when the devastating German bombing campaign of November 1940 rendered the tram tracks damaged beyond economic repair, the whole tramway was abandoned in February 1941.

GKV 94 is one of 96 of these vehicles, delivered from 1948 onwards with all but one being in service by the close of 1950. GKV 94 is a Daimler CVA6 double-decker of 1950 vintage which has Metro-Cammell bodywork; purchased for preservation in 1968, the vehicle is nearing the end of its current major restoration. It seats sixty people, though we won’t have it filled to capacity - although, on our previous trip we actually picked up some paying passengers who spent the day with us, so one never knows what might happen if word gets around!

As you know, our local team plans our Coventry vintage charters and locations with military precision and considerable local knowledge. That should ensure we are in the right places at the right times to take
advantage of the opportunity to photograph two beautifully-restored vehicles in what was formerly their natural habitat. The fleet is amongst the finest in preservation, internally and externally, and it is a delight to be able to use these vehicles.

A relaxed and enjoyable day is planned with lots of good photographic opportunities thrown in for good measure as we again turn back the vintage transport clock.
