About this event

We are delighted to offer you an evening of Summer steam action at Didcot Railway Centre in Oxfordshire featuring Saint Class 4-6-0 No.2999 Lady of Legend and No.1340 Trojan, both in steam, plus a supporting cast of Nos.6106 and 5322.

Our two principal locos will be in steam and we will photograph them in various positions around the shed and yard area. We will use Large Prairie No.6106, also in Great Western livery, with a smoke machine to produce the effect of a working locomotive and feature Mogul 2-6-0 No.5322 turned to face chimney first into the shed so that its livery matches that of the other three locomotives. This should allow us to recreate scenes closely reminiscent of depot scenes of the Great Western era.

Trojan is now in its 124th year, having been built by the Bristol-based Avonside Engineering Company in 1897. The loco worked originally for Dunn and Shute of Newport Town Dock before being purchased by the Alexandra Docks Railway (ADR) in 1903 to work their extensive dock sidings around Newport in South Wales. The ADR was absorbed into the Great Western Railway at Grouping in 1923, after which 1340 worked mainly out of Cardiff and Radyr depots and later from Oswestry in Shropshire and Greenford in London. After withdrawal by the GWR in 1932, No.1340 was sold into industrial service, first for Netherseal Colliery in Staffordshire and then for Alders of Tamworth. The loco arrived at Didcot Railway Centre in 1968 and, after a protracted overhaul, first steamed in preservation in 2002. Trojan was most recently overhauled in Loughborough, returning to steam in March 2021. The locomotive looks superb in its Great Western livery and we look forward to using the loco for the first time on one of our events in July.

Lady of Legend probably needs no introduction by now. This is the newest rebuild project to emerge onto the heritage scene, being completed in 2019. Using parts from No.4942 Maindy Hall and other locos, the Great Western Society has created one of the missing links in the GWR story, a new member of the Saint Class of locomotive. The final working members of the class were withdrawn by British Railways in 1953 with none surviving into preservation. This is a handsome addition to the ranks of Britain’s steam locos and we are delighted to be able to offer you another opportunity to photograph No.2999 in its home surroundings.

Please arrive from 16.30 onwards ready for our routine but most important safety briefing before we begin at approximately 17.30, running until around 22.00 hours. We will try and ensure that the cafe is open for part of the evening. Our previous events at Didcot have provided us with many great photographs and today should be no exception, and we look forward to welcoming you on another pictorial voyage into the past.
