About this event
In 1959 three Gaffer skippers organised their own race in the Solent and did so each year with increasing numbers of entrants, until 1963 when another race was started on the east coast with equal success. The two groups later combined to form the Old Gaffers Association which now boasts over 1,400 members in the UK.
The sight of a harbour full of gaff rigged boats, dressed overall, evokes a bygone age and is in complete contrast to the usual fleet of white fibreglass! The Old Gaffers travel from all over the country to participate and race at the Festival. As well as the Gaffers themselves, there are races for X and Y class yachts - Bermudan rigged but around 100 years old - and Scow and Optimist dinghies.
Our day will start at Ocean Village, Southampton at around 09.30am where we set sail for Yarmouth and the main hub of activity. During our day at sea we will get amongst the action up close to all the wonderful different classes of Gaffers. We will return to Ocean Village around 5.30pm after what is hoped a great day out capturing all the action up close and personal.
Places are limited to 11 due to insurance and the boat we will be aboard. Our boat for the day is Anchorman, a large Catamaran that is perfect for photography with its large rear deck and top speed of 28knots. Matt our skipper is an extremely experienced sailor so you are assured of a great safe day in the thick of all the action.
