About this event

Join us for this fantastic opportunity to capture The Red Sands Forts at dawn in the Thames Estuary! The Red Sands Forts, also known as the Maunsell army forts were built during the Second World War to aid Britain's defence against attack. These large installations compromise of seven interconnected steel platforms, five carried guns arranged in a semicircle around the control centre and accommodation and the seventh fort, set further out than the gun towers, was the searchlight tower.

Departing at circa 05:15 from Queenborough Harbour on our own private dedicated photography boat, our ETA to the forts will be 06:00, giving plenty of time before sunrise at 06:30am, giving time to capture any dawn light before the sun breaks above the waves. We will be positioned with the forts ahead and sunrise behind them for the first part of the morning, so that dawn will break behind the Forts giving the opportunity to capture them with dramatic skies behind. We will then re position for a different angle after the sun has risen for the chance to capture them illuminated by the golden hour light. Our trip will give us 2 hours out at the forts before returning to Queenborough Harbour for circa 09:30-09:45am.

As this is a weather dependant trip we have also reserved the 11th September which will act as a back up date if the weather on the 10th proves to be too challenging for photography. We will make a weather assessment 48 hours before the event and advise everyone accordingly. In the event of the weather being bad for both the 10th and 11th September 2022 we would postpone to another date.

For those wishing to book accommodation for the night before, a hotel just 10 minutes walk from the meeting point has kindly offered those attending the trip 10% off accommodation. The hotel is: The Queen Phillippa Hotel, high street, Queenborough, ME11 5AQ. Accommodation can be cancelled 48 hours before check in (if adverse weather is forecast) and breakfast can be enjoyed on return from the boat trip. If booking let them know you are attending the Red Sands Forts boat trip with TimeLine Events.
