About this event

Join us for a celebratory weekend of vintage transport photography in picturesque villages around Lincolnshire using two fantastic 1950s buses from the preserved fleet of the Delaine Heritage Trust. Our day starts from and finishes at the Delaine Heritage Trust Museum in Spalding Road, Bourne, Lincolnshire, PE10 9LE.

Our day in 2021 did not produce fine, sunny weather (and had early morning storms and flooding!) this visit will again feature a classic Leyland vehicle in the livery of its original operating company, working in the area where it first entered service with Delaine in the late-1950s. MTL 750 is a single-decker Leyland Tiger Cub dating from 1958. The vehicle was first operated by Delaine and is currently based at the company’s Museum in Bourne; we are extremely grateful to the Museum and its owners, Leicester Arts and Museum Service, for the opportunity to use the Tiger Cub again for our charter. The Tiger Cub would have doubled up on coach services and as a standby service vehicle as required, so photographically fits either scenario.

Our second vehicle will be a classic PD2/20 double-decker of 1956 which also carries the very distinctive Delaine blue and white livery, colours that are totally authentic and which have graced the district for many decades. The Leyland Titan PD2/20 with Willowbrook of Loughborough H35/28RD bodywork entered service with Delaine when brand new and was withdrawn from service in December 1978.

Sold into preservation with the Kings Lynn and District Preservation Society in May 1979, it then passed through a number of owners. The bus was repurchased by the company in 1990 and passed to their Heritage Trust in 2015. No.45 (KTL 780) was the last company bus to be purchased by Thomas Arthur Smith (1896-1958) who introduced motor buses into the family business in 1919; it has the distinction of being the only vehicle to have been driven by every generation of the family active in the business. The vehicle entered service in April 1956 and was in continuous use until 1978. Following repurchase in 1990 by Delaine, some extensive refurbishment was undertaken so that KTL 780 could be used for special duties; it was certified as a PSV in 1992 and is now one of six buses operated by the Delaine Heritage Trust. No.45 is maintained in immaculate condition and, together with the Tiger Cub, we have the ingredients for a very rewarding day of authentic vintage transport photography.

The PD2/20 Titan design dates from 1953. They were produced in large numbers with the largest order coming from Edinburgh Corporation, which ordered 300 vehicles of this type to replace the City’s trams which ceased in 1956. Liverpool Corporation also took 200 vehicles of this type, and the Scottish Bus Group and almost all of its subsidiaries operated these vehicles for two decades. Five were built for the wholly British Railways-owned Sheffield Transport ‘C Fleet’ in 1957.

Those who have joined us for our previous charters with Delaine will know that they are very enthusiastic and professional, and that there are some excellent locations to be visited in this under-appreciated area of the country. We are aiming for a fun day out with lots of great photographic opportunities, so let’s hope for some fine, sunny weather!
