About this event

We have something special in store for fans of Western Region branch line steam in March when we offer a day using 5700 Pannier Tank No.5786 in British Railways black livery. The South Devon Railway has kindly agreed to put 5786 into satin black livery carrying the later BR crest at the very end of the loco’s ten-year boiler ticket. TimeLine is extremely pleased to offer a full day of branch line steam photography with the engine heading a short mixed train including at least one carmine and cream coach on this scenic and picturesque railway running through West Country rural serenity alongside the River Dart.

If success can be judged by sheer weight of numbers, then Great Western Railway Pannier Tanks were simply outstanding, with no fewer than 863 of the 5700 Class alone being produced between 1929 and (under Western Region ownership) 1949. No.5786 was built at Swindon in 1930. Many Pannier Tanks survived until near the end of Western Region steam at the close of December 1965, but 5786 was an earlier withdrawal (from Cardiff Canton in April 1958) being one of thirteen sold to London Transport, the last of which were withdrawn from Neasden Depot in 1971, 5786 becoming L92. Along with Kitson industrial 0-6-0ST Carnarvon, 5786 was purchased by the Worcester Locomotive Society and, after a brief period on the fledgling Severn Valley Railway, became a long term resident at Bulmer’s Cider Works in Hereford where King George V was stabled during its pioneering period of main line operation. When steam at Bulmers ceased, the two Worcester Locomotive Society locos moved to the South Devon Railway where both continue to be based.

This is a very limited opportunity and one which is bound to be popular. We are grateful to the South Devon Railway and the Worcester Locomotive Society for facilitating this event, and hope you will wish to join us for some superb Spring steam action on this idyllic Western Region branch line.
