About this event

We are delighted to offer you a day in rural Herefordshire with two fantastic shire horses paired with some very appropriate vehicles. We have chosen mid-May as we feel this gives us a good chance of the blossom for which the area is famous being in full bloom, though of course nature offers no guarantees!

The Westons Cider story began in 1872 when Henry Weston first started brewing ciders and perries at The Bounds, the original farm building around which the current cider mill is based. Five generations on, the mill has developed into a business which employs two hundred people and continues to produce and distribute a wide range of ciders, many brands of which are household names.

Shire horses have been a part of the Westons story since its earliest days, whether being used to drive the millstone to crush apples as part of the cider-making process, ploughing the nearby fields or hauling deliveries being made to local hostelries. Today, the shires are retired but still play an important part in the heritage of the business, appearing at local shows and weddings.

Westons own shire is called Reg. Reg is big, even by shire horse standards (standing next to him, you look up - and up again!) as he measures nineteen hands high and weighs in at 800 kilograms. Reg is twelve years old and a beautiful chestnut colour with flashes of white. His companion is Boris, a white shire who will be joining Reg for our event. We will be delivering to the nearby Slip Public House and using fields adjoining the orchards. We will be able to watch and photograph the horses being prepared for their duties and then pulling vehicles and hopefully using some additional farming equipment. The day will be divided into morning and afternoon sessions with a lunch break in between, both for us and the horses.

The site is at an easily reached location in the Midlands, accessed from Junction Two of the M50 and from there via the A438 and A449. There is a large free car park opposite the extensive brewery site and there are excellent catering facilities which we can use for both breakfast and lunch. The enthusiastic staff are extremely keen to make the day a success, and we are looking forward to an interesting and entertaining event with plenty of photographic opportunities throughout.
