About this event

We are pleased to offer a day of travel and photography using a classic double-decker of 1956 vintage courtesy of the Delaine Heritage Trust. The vehicle carries a very distinctive livery, and colours that are totally authentic in that the PD2/20 entered service with Delaine from new and was repurchased by the company in 1990, being donated to their Heritage Trust in 2015. The bus is based at Bourne in Lincolnshire which is where we will start and finish our day. We will travel to some of the more photogenic locations in the area, starting at around 09.15 and returning to Bourne by 18.00 hours.

Our vehicle for the day, No.45, was the last bus to be purchased by Thomas Arthur Smith (1896-1958) who introduced motor buses into the family business in 1919 and has the distinction of being the only vehicle to have been driven by every generation of the family active in the business. The PD2 entered service in April 1956 and operated with the company until being withdrawn from service in December 1978. It was privately preserved between 1979 and 1990, when it again joined the Delaine fleet. Following extensive refurbishment for use on special duties, the PD2 was certified as a PSV in 1992 and is now one of four buses operated by the Delaine Heritage Trust. No.45 is in immaculate condition and, combined with some period re-enactors and one or two accompanying period vehicles, we should have the ingredients for an excellent day of vintage photography.

The PD2/20 ’Titan’  design dates from 1953. They were produced in large numbers with the largest order coming from Edinburgh Corporation which was at the time looking to replace its trams with motor buses and ordered 300 vehicles of this type. Liverpool Corporation also took 200 vehicles of this type, and the Scottish Bus Group and almost all of its subsidiaries operated these vehicles for two decades. Five were built for the wholly British Railways-owned Sheffield Transport ‘C Fleet’ in 1957. Our vehicle carries a Willowbrook body.

We are aiming for a relaxed and enjoyable day out with some great photographic opportunities thrown in for good measure, and hope you will wish to join us for a Saturday of photography with a classic heritage vehicle.

Numbers will be limited to ensure comfortable conditions for photography.
