About this event

In many ways, deepest Winter is the time of year when potentially the most spectacular results can be obtained in steam railway photography and we are pleased to offer the first of two days of Winter steam action at the Great Central Railway in January 2018.

Our charter locomotive today is Ivatt ‘2MT’ Class 2-6-0 No.46521 which has recently been repainted into the British Railways green livery prototypical for the engine when it was running on the former Cambrian lines of British Railways Western Region. The Ivatt will be paired with the GCR’s van train which has recently been revamped and now presents a very acceptable recreation of a 1950s era British Railways van formation.

Completed at Swindon in February 1953, this former Royal Train engine has been based at the Great Central Railway since 2001. Originally allocated to Oswestry Depot, 46521 spent most of its working life in Wales. Towards the end of its British Railways career, the loco was transferred to London Midland Region for heavy repairs at Crewe prior to working the Royal Train in August 1963. The loco remained in service until October 1966. After spending the period 1967-1971 at Woodham Brothers Scrapyard at Barry, Charles Newton rescued the locomotive and took it to the Severn Valley Railway where it returned to steam in 1974. A Severn Valley Railway workhorse for over 20 years, making a brief return to the main line in 1992 and later featuring as Blossom in the BBC TV series Oh, Dr Beeching. A move to the GCR came in 2001 and 46521 is now jointly owned by Charles Newton and the Loughborough Standard Locomotive Group Limited, to whom we are grateful for allowing use of the locomotive for our charter.

The day will start from and finish at Loughborough station, where we will also return for a short period at lunchtime to allow a crew change and for the locomotive to be serviced. Start time will be 08.00 from Loughborough to ensure we make the most of any available light during the shorter Winter days. Depending on booking numbers, we will either follow by car or, if sufficient funds are forthcoming, we will hire the ‘chasing’ Diesel Multiple Unit.

We look forward to seeing many of you at the Great Central Railway in late January for a reminder of Western Region locals in the 1950s and early 1960s.

Cost is £75.00 per person.
