About this event

Following on directly from our two days of charters with the iconic British Railways Pacific No.70013 Oliver Cromwell, we are delighted to be able to offer a further day of classic steam action using visiting Bulleid 'Battle of Britain' Pacific 4-6-2 No.34092 City of Wells.

Our charter with No.34092 will feature alternate sessions using the Great Central Railway's superb van train and a rake of carmine and cream passenger coaches. The locomotive currently carries British Railways green livery with the earlier emblem and as such is appropriate to pair with both formations.

We will meet at Loughborough station at 07.30 hours for our customary but important safety briefing. We will be able to travel by train when using the passenger set. When using the goods stock, we will not be able to travel by train so we will follow by car. An element of car sharing would be appreciated so that we have as few vehicles as possible to park at lineside locations. We will have a full day photographing with just a short break at lunchtime to allow for a change of crew and to service the locomotive.

Built at Brighton in 1949 and initially allocated to Stewart's Lane, the streamlined Light Pacific was named Wells, later revised to City of Wells in 1950. After electrification of Southern Region lines in Kent, 34092 was transferred to Salisbury in 1961 from where it was withdrawn in 1964. Rescued from Woodham Brothers’ Scrap Yard at Barry in South Wales in 1971, the locomotive spent its early years of preservation at the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway where it was returned to steam in 1979. It spent ten successful years working at the KWVR and also made many main line trips. During the latter years of this period, 34092 was fitted with an ejector, similar to an experiment trialed by British Railways with No.34064 Fighter Command using a Giesl ejector, and this improved the fuel efficiency and lifting of the exhaust on City of Wells. After some 25 years out of service, 34092 returned to steam at the KWVR in 2014. Since then, it has been based away from the KWVR due to weight restrictions imposed on a bridge near Ingrow West where locos moving on and off the KWVR are loaded and unloaded; this has meant that the engine cannot easily return home. City of Wells is currently based at the East Lancashire Railway, a move which may become permanent by the close of 2018 subject to successful fundraising.

We hope you will join us for further a day at the lineside with this classic streamlined Southern Pacific hauling two authentic combinations.
