About this event

As an added bonus for our Autumnal visit to the North Norfolk Railway, we are delighted to be able to offer an extra day of steam action featuring Gresley 'N2' Class 0-6-2T No.1744. The locomotive was scheduled for withdrawal for major overhaul in August this year, but due to limited use over the hot, dry Summer season, its boiler ticket has been extended for an additional few months. This has presented us with what is almost certainly the only opportunity to charter the locomotive in Great Northern Railway lined green livery at the head of the superb Quad-art set No.74 before the N2 is definitely withdrawn early in 2019.

The day will start from Sheringham station at 08.30 and we expect the cafe to be open for those who are not staying at a bed and breakfast - or those who are, and fancy a hot drink and an additional little something to keep them going for the day!

We are visiting this late in the year to give ourselves the best possible chance of capturing the stunning glints and back-lighting opportunities that are so abundant on the North Norfolk Railway at this time of the season. On this occasion, we will not have an extended lunch break at Weybourne because we wish to make the fullest possible use of the daylight - and hopefully glorious sunlight - available to us in November. As evening falls, we will hold a night shoot at Weybourne station, another location which lends itself to evocative steam scenes of days past.

No.1744 was one of sixty N2 Class locomotives built to the design of Sir Nigel Gresley for working local passenger trains, primarily out of Kings Cross station though some were allocated as far North as Scotland. The loco was built in 1920 by the North British Locomotive Company and is the only surviving preserved Gresley-designed tank engine. It was based at Kings Cross depot until early 1962 before being moved to Peterborough New England shed for the final few months of its working life prior to withdrawal in September 1962; No.1744 (as 69523) was purchased for preservation by the Gresley Society in 1963. No locos of the class survived beyond 1962 in BR service, mainly due to extensive diesel replacement on their rostered routes.

So, we have the chance to photograph this ideal pairing of loco and stock on a lovely railway and we very much hope you will support this event which promises to be very special. We would like to extend our grateful thanks to the ever-enthusiastic North Norfolk Railway and to the owners of 1744, the Gresley Society, for facilitating this charter. Those who have been before will know the great potential that the line offers and we hope that you will join us in Norfolk for what will almost certainly be the last chance to pair the Great Northern Railway-liveried 'N2' with the stunning Quad-art set on a photographic charter.

Event cost £65.00 per person.
