About this event

With grateful thanks to the Ragged Victorians and the Black Country Living Museum, we invite you to join us for a day of photography in the West Midlands with one of the most authentic re-enacting groups to be found anywhere, being photographed against excellent period backdrops.

The Ragged Victorians are a high-quality, award-winning living history group who specialize in portraying life as it was for the lower classes in the 1850s. This was a time of immense hardship for ‘the great unwashed’ who often had no homes, no income and definitely no benefits system to fall back on. We are privileged to be able to work once again with a group so highly-regarded for their historical interpretation and attention to detail.

The Ragged Victorians were the first re-enacting group to begin accurately portraying this less than glamorous and often-overlooked aspect of British history. The opposite side of the coin to the great triumphs of the Industrial Revolution, the group depicts the suffering and day-to-day struggles of the working classes who had to perform some of society’s least savoury duties in return for wages that amounted to no more than a pittance. The group embraces the roles of the historical characters that they portray, warts and all, and are as good at what they do as anyone.

We are working within public opening hours of 10.00 until 17.00 hours. This has never caused us any problem at previous events. We will spend some time around the canal area of the Museum as this particularly lends itself to the kind of views we aim to recreate. Please arrive by 09.45 for an introduction and safety briefing prior to us entering the site at 10.00. We aim to be photographing until around 16.30 hours, with a break for lunch around 13.00.

The concept of the Museum dates back to the mid-1950s, and in 1966 a special Black Country Museum Section was formed as part of Dudley Museums Department. It was in April 1976 that the idea of an open-air museum first began to come to fruition and West Midlands County Council started a land reclamation scheme in that same year; a preview season demonstrating the future potential of the site was held in 1978. The Museum has since gone from strength to strength and now welcomes over 300,000 visitors each year. It represents the enterprise, trades, products, buildings, living conditions - including the poverty and hardship - and heritage legacy of a region renowned as one of the fastest-beating hearts of the Industrial Revolution.

The Museum has a vast wealth of photographic possibilities, far too many to cover in one day so we will concentrate on specific areas of the site. It is set on 26 acres of former industrial land and makes use of its previous industrial features as well as augmenting this with period streets, buildings, a canal arm and boat dock (linked to the Dudley Canal) and factories relocated from their original venues. Together they recall the industrialized Black Country as well as reflecting in places the semi-rural ambiance that the area retained despite the nature of the work undertaken across its landscape.

Based on previous experience, this is likely to be an extremely popular event so please book early to ensure a place. We look forward to seeing you in the West Midlands to recreate another glimpse of the past as only the Ragged Victorians can portray it.

Event cost £79.00 per person.
