About this event

With the Great Central Railway-based 3F Class 'Jinty' No.47406 reaching the end of its current boiler certificate in October of this year, we could not resist offering a final charter opportunity for some considerable time with this locomotive. As something different to formations we have offered in the past with the loco, we will pair 47406 with the two red-liveried suburban coaches and the lines 16T Mineral Wagon rake, thus recreating services this class of engine would of worked in the 1950’s/60’s.

Also a change to the ‘norm’ this event will start at lunchtime from Loughborough station at 14.00 and we will run until sunset. We will take in as many locations as we can (it is still possible to do afternoon shots between Woodthorpe and Quorn as the building work is currently on the other side of the line) and travel as far as Swithland. We may even do a couple of bunker first run-pasts for those looking to venture into something more risky! Then we will head back to Loughborough for a short night shoot, finishing at 22.00 hours.

Built in 1926 as LMS 16489 and first allocated to Warrington and then Crewe, No.47406 was principally a Carnforth-based engine, being based at this depot for over thirty years from 1928 onwards. A series of moves saw 47406 transferred between several sheds in the North of England towards the end of British Railways main line steam, its final shed being Liverpool Edge Hill from where the '3F' was withdrawn in December 1967. The loco was one of seven members of the class to find their way to Woodham Brothers' Scrapyard at Barry in South Wales and was the last of the seven to be secured for preservation, moving initially to Peak Rail, in June 1983. Consequently, the loco had 'donated' many parts to other members of the class and required much restoration and many brand new components. What was left of the loco was subsequently purchased privately by Roger Hibbert and painstakingly restored over many years at the Great Central Railway; 47406 finally returned to steam in January 2010 and has been a useful and popular performer at the GCR ever since.

This will almost certainly be the last charter with 47406 before it is withdrawn from traffic and we hope a number of you will wish to join us for this different format of event as we bid a temporary farewell to this popular little locomotive.
