About this event

Join us for a day of photography at the superb Beamish North of England Open Air Museum. Today, we concentrate largely on steam around the colliery railway and to a lesser extent on the narrow gauge and we anticipate having four locomotive in steam. First off shed in the morning will be the Head Wrightson vertical -boilered No.1. This will be followed by Lewin 0-4-0ST No.18 when the two will be in steam working together. Later in the day, facing west (opposite to the other locos) we will use R2 Class 0-4-0ST Peckett No.1370 of 1915 which should be available by the Summer. We will run the full morning at the colliery before breaking for lunch.

In the afternoon, we aim to set up some scenes in and around the coal yard as the Rowley area should be quiet with no train activity scheduled for this year. We will be assisted by the Friends of Beamish and hope to use the Leyland tipping lorry and Morris commercial for loading/unloading scenes. We will endeavour to set up other afternoon cameos around the extensive site before we reconvene around 16.00 at the Colliery where we will have use of 1370 (the sun should be on the front of the locomotive by now). We will also be using Glyder on the two foot gauge and, amongst other shots, hope to pose the loco alongside Crosville Leyland Cub single decker 716 of 1933 vintage which has recently been restored from derelict condition to active service. We also hope to use the Museum’s Model T Ford alongside the World War I era Simplex; both are in army livery and we are trying to source a couple of people in period uniform to complete the scene.

Please note that everything advertised is based on what we believe is achievable and is offered in good faith. Please bear in mind it is possible that there may be one or two enforced changes if Covid-19 means delays in returning particular vehicles to service. We are not expecting this but be aware of the possibility because, as has been the case for every other heritage venue, the past year has been far from a normal time in the life of the Museum.

The normal catering facilities will be open around the Museum during the daytime and we hope you will wish to join us for what promises to be an excellent day of steam and vintage transport photography.

Currently all of our events will run in line with our Covid-19 policy that follows government guidelines. You can find our Covid-19 policy information page here.
