About this event

We are delighted to be able to offer you a full day of British Railways steam action at the Great Central Railway featuring '9F' Class 2-10-0 No.92134 which is paying the East Midlands a short working visit from its base at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The locomotive will be paired with both the Railway's van train which numbers circa fifteen operational vehicles and will look fantastic at the head of this rake, with the addition of a mixed goods rake for part of the day to give added variety.

Our day will start at Swithland Sidings at 08.30 and we will run until sunset. There will be a lunch break at Quorn where the Butler Henderson Cafe will be open. The event will be limited to circa thirty photographers to ensure comfortable conditions at the lineside.

No.92134 was built in 1957 at Crewe Works and was initially allocated to Saltley Depot, Birmingham from May 1957. The 9F was transferred to Wellingborough in December of the same year and there it remained until transfer to Leicester Midland in February 1964; its final allocation was to Birkenhead in April 1965.

Withdrawal came from Birkenhead Shed in December 1966, and the locomotive went to Woodham Brothers' scrap yard at Barry in South Wales in the following year, where it languished for a little over thirteen years before being rescued for preservation in December 1980. The restoration was a long process over many years, firstly at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, then Crewe's Railway Age, then the East Lancashire Railway and latterly back at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which is where 92134 is usually based. The loco was returned to steam in Autumn 2019 and is paying its first visit to the Great Central Railway since restoration was completed. The locomotive's original BR1C tender was sold and modified for use with 71000 Duke of Gloucester, so the engine operates with a borrowed tender.

We would like to extend grateful thanks to the locomotive's private owners, its home line the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the host line the Great Central Railway for allowing this charter to take place. We know this will be a popular event, and we look forward to seeing you in Leicestershire in October to see this unique engine in action.
