The Army Historic Aircraft Flight (AHAF) came into being in its present format on the 21st March 1990, but was originally formed in 1980. The Charter allows the Army Air Corps (AAC) to maintain in flying condition one example of each aircraft it has operated since its formation in 1957 in order to preserve the Army’s aviation heritage. The AHAF enjoys some limited support from the Ministry of Defence; however the vast majority of costs are borne by donations and seasonal display income, which is administered through the AHAF Charitable Company. The six different aircraft types have a combined regular service of 146 years and the AHAF is unique by being the only display team in the world with both fixed and rotary wing aircraft.

The Flight is based at the Army Aviation Centre at Middle Wallop in Hampshire and consists of:

XR 244 - Auster AOP Mk 9

XP 820 - De Havilland Beaver AL Mk 1

WD 325 - De Havilland Chipmunk T10 (not available for the 7th)

XT 131 - Agusta-Bell Sioux AH Mk 1

XR 379 - Sud Aviation Alouette II (not available for the 7th)

XT 626 - Westland Scout AH Mk 1

Westland Wasp - HAS1 XT787

They also have a Skeeter, which is preserved in a non-flying condition and can be displayed on special occasions by the Flight.  This will be on display for us on the 7th.

Apart from the De Havilland Chipmunk these aircraft types have seen action in at least one of the following theatres of operation: Palestine, Malaya, Borneo, Aden, Kenya, Cyprus, the Falkland Islands and Northern Ireland. All have also routinely operated in the UK, Germany or Canada.

The AHAF is the only Army Flying Display Team and order to keep these amazing machines flying the AHAF relies on the goodwill of serving and former AAC pilots, maintainers and generous donations from members of the public and now you as a supporter of TimeLine Events.

Our time at Middle Wallop with the AHAF will start at around 2.00pm with some ‘hover’ action from the Scout & Sioux. With the days short at this time of year we will be positioning our subjects with Sunset in mind in the hope that we will be able to capture this unique fine array of aircraft with some of the best winter light on offer. During this period we will have a small group of Re-enactors and Pilots on hand to bring some scenes to life and add that human interest.

As the sun sets over the airfield our lights will be turned on and the airframes lit ever hopeful of that ‘blue sky shot’. As dusk turns to night, one by one each of the serviceable airframes we will be fired up to allow you the unique opportunity of capturing them in action! Night on any airfield takes on a truly amazing feel and we believe this evening will be no exception with so much on offer we expect the time to fly….

As we go live with this event we are still working on the full program and expect to be adding a few more twists and turns for your enjoyment. We may even have another airframe to announce soon!

There will be food available on the day (for an extra charge) with kind thanks to the Museum of Army Flying, the Museum is next to the airfield so perfectly placed for our convenience. We hope to also have further news of an added extra event for the daytime that the museum is currently putting together and will bring you this information in due course.

We expect demand for places to be high as this is our first event with the AHAF and indeed the first of its type they have hosted, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Start time for this event will be approx. 14.00 but confirmation will be sent once your booking has been received.

For full details of the AHAF and the individual aircraft within the flight please follow this link to an online PDF.

Event cost £60.00 per person.
