We are delighted to be able to offer you a full day of Winter steam action at the Great Central Railway with visiting 'Q' Class 0-6-0 No.30541 on a short rake of British Railways-era box vans.
No.30541 currently carries the unlined British
Railways black livery with the later crest associated with its latter years
prior to withdrawal in 1964. Matched with a short rake of BR-era box vans which
are nicely 'weathered' the combination should look superb. We will have a full
day out on the line with the loco, using both the fantastic double track
section and the single line section beyond Rothley and up to Leicester North
station. We will also have an evening shoot under lights
to conclude the day.
No.30541 is the sole surviving member of the 'Q' Class and is paying a short working visit to the Great Central Railway to appear at their Winter Steam Gala. Normally based at the Bluebell Railway, the locomotive is one of five owned by the Maunsell Locomotive Society who completed its most recent overhaul in April 2015. Built in January 1939 (as SR 541) it was one of twenty members of the class designed to replace some of the more elderly 0-6-0s working on the Southern Railway and was Maunsell's final design for the SR, entering traffic under his successor Oliver Bulleid. After withdrawal in November 1964, it languished in Woodham Brothers Scrapyard at Barry in South Wales until rescue in 1973, moving first to Ashchurch in Gloucestershire and then to the Bluebell Railway in 1978; a first return to steam in preservation came in 1983.
We will start from Loughborough station at 07.30 hours to make maximum use of the available light. The griddle car will be available during the day to serve both early morning breakfasts and then dinner later in the day, so we have your catering needs taken care of, too!
