About this event

For our second day on the Isle of Wight, we are using an Ivatt 2-6-2T, probably No.41298 though it may be 41313. Although the locos did not work on the Isle of Wight during British Railways steam, they were at one time mooted as a replacement for older motive power. No.41298 emerged from Crewe in 1951 and spent its working life in the south of England. The loco's first shed was Bricklayer's Arms and it mainly worked in and out of Victoria station with empty stock. It later worked around Barnstaple in the West Country for a couple of years before moving to Weymouth where 41298 was used on local services. At the end of BR Southern Region main line steam in 1967, No.41298 was purchased directly from British Railways by the Ivatt Locomotive Society and moved to the Longmoor Military Railway in Hampshire. A move to Quainton Railway Centre in Buckinghamshire came in December 1970 which became the long-term base for the loco until going to the Isle of Wight in 2008. The following year saw transfer of ownership to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway where the locomotive was returned to full working order in 2015.

Our day will start from and finish at Haven Street station. For the first part of our charter, we will be using passenger stock in the form of four green bogie coaches. Later in the day, we will transfer to goods stock, using a short rake of open wagons and brake van. This will give us a variety during the day and allow some different shots to those which are usually on offer. 

At this time of the year, the better light and consequently the better photographic opportunities are to be found in the afternoon and early evening. Therefore, rather than plan for a conventional 'office hours' charter which would take out potentially the best lighting at each end of the day, we have opted to start in later morning at 11.00 which will allow us to run on into the evening to make the most of optimum lighting conditions, with a finishing time around 19.30. 

The line is a haven of nostalgia for those who remember the days of steam, so why not join us for a day stepping back in time to the days when steam still ruled the Isle of Wight's railway network.
